THE HALLYU WAVE
K-Pop, there is no way you have not heard of it. Korean pop music has taken over the world since the last two years and is still taking the world by storm. Which was formerly considered a strange, niche obsession has now become a global sensation.
Boy groups, girl groups and solo artists, K-pop artists are now on top of every list. From major rankings on Billboard charts to skyrocketing platinum tier album sales. The world just cannot seem to get enough of the hallyu wave.
Let us look into some of the very hardworking and popular groups who made it this far and are kings and queens of the K-pop scene. K-pop was not very popular until the year of 2015 there was an up rise and Korean artists starting collaborating with big names from the west. Slowly and gradually they have now taken over the world. Language is no barrier considering, the music is just so hype. Fans all over the world are obsessing over these idols and are trying to learn hangul, so that if they ever get a chance to meet their idols, they can have a conversation with them.
Let’s start with the Kings of K-pop, EXO!
EXO first debuted on the 8th of April, 2012 with the single MAMA, which introduced the concept of the boy group. A group of very good looking aliens hailing from EXO planet. Each of them were given a special ability by the “Tree of Life”. The planet is dying and these nine are the chosen ones. Sehun controlling the element of air, D.O, the earth bender. Kim Kai who can teleport, Suho, the leader and guardian of EXO controls water, Chanyeol the hailer of fire, Lay the alien with the healing, Baekhyun the controller of light, Chen controls lightning and lastly, Xiumin the ice boy.
The group had a rough start but after their hit singles wolf and growl, which are considered legendary K-pop songs that will never die, but only when humanity does. They began to achieve a staggering amount of success and since then have been quintuple million sellers, making an astounding record of 1.1 million album sold in a span of ten days. EXO is an all-rounder group and is known as the marvel of K-pop. After Don’t Mess up My Tempo and Love Shot, the group went on hiatus for their military service.
A shame exols will have to wait for five years but the fandom is strong and they will sail through. We wish EXO the best of luck! This boy group has the crowned vocals of K-pop, Kim Jongdae, Byun Baekhyun and Do Kyungso. Not to mention, Byun Baekhyun got wished by the Prime Minister of South Korea on his birthday. Kim Kai, Oh Sehun and Park Chanyeol who have graced the faces of Louis Viton, Gucci, Vogue Korea and so many other huge names. They are fashion icons for men and women alike. Breaking the fragile masculinity stereotypes. Yes, we stan!
Next up, is the one and only TWICE!
The most popular girl group in Asia, under JYP Entertainment. With nine members, Momo, Mina, Sana, Dahyun, Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Tzuyu and Chaeyong. Their fandom name is ONCE, how cute is that? The girl group follows the kawaii cutesy cpncept and absolutely kills it. Though as of late with Fancy, they have changed up their concept. Still the group mainly focuses on creating an aura of happiness and tag along dances and tunes. The group hit massive successs right from their debut, the survival show by JYP. “Sixteen” was the reason of anticipation and how the girls were so popular from the start.
But let me tell you they deserve it. The leader of the group, Jihyo had been a trainee for over ten years before she could debut on Sixteen. The group has an overall and individual charm, from tom boyish Jeongyeonto the all smiles and giggles Sana. The group has released pretty catchy songs and is one of the few K-pop groups that hit over 100 million views in a matter of days. The group’s main focus is not to showcase talents but to deliver a good show. They officially debuted in 2015 and till now they are going strong.
GOT7, AGASES UNITE!
The crack head group with the craziest members; Jackson Wang, Kim Yugyeom, ImJaebum, Park Jin-Young, BamBam, Mark and Youngjae. These seven guys have taken over the heart of people across the globe. The group has three international members, that being Jackson Wang from Hong Kong, BamBam from Thailand and Mark Tuan from the US.
The group had always been right behind some of the bigger names but they have finally risen to the status the so rightfully worked hard for. Since they received artist of the year award for last year and best popular award too. We’d say the stars have aligned and the boys are finally getting the recognition they deserved. There most popular tracks are Hardcarry, Just Right, 7 for 7 and Flight log: Arrival.
The girl group by SM Entertainment everyone had deemed a flop, really climbed up the rank and showed their haters how it’s done. The group was initially supposed to be Girls’ Generation 2.0 but the girls fought all that slander. They are now one of the biggest girl groups around the planet. The girls really kick started their career with Ice Cream Cake, which featured the debut of Yeri. The fifth and youngest member of the group.
The group consists of Irene, the visual and rapper, Joy, the vocalist, Wendy, the main vocalist, Seulgi, the sub vocalist and Yeri, the sub rapper. Though, everyone can admit if I had not mentioned who the visual was, none of us would ever have known, since all of them are so unreal looking.
That is all for today folks! There are so many talented idol groups and singers out there, it is not just limited to the ones mentioned today. Keep supporting your favorites!
